Todays prompt comes from Reddit. At the time of writing this it was the 5th prompt of the new page. I really like the subreddit Writing Prompts because its like I get to write a story tailored exactly to what that reader wants, I however dont get to post on there very often.
This one will probably be longer than a few paragraphs simply because I intend to use some dialogue in it, so here goes.
There is a long rich history to dueling, many rules too. There are seconds and heralds and lanterns and so many rules and etiquette. You duel when your honor has been threatened or taken. You duel for love, life and happiness. Well usueally; that is not the case here. A knights honor has been threatened, he does not know that he has no honor eft, being the worst knight in a kingdom will do that to you.
Sir Reginald had finally found riches! A bounty on a local thug had been tripled since the killing of some dukes sheep. Dead or alive the paper said, and Sir Reginald happened upon him dozing in a barn on his rounds of a neighboring village. He stappeed him through the heart then took his head as proof. It was a clean kill, he was proud of himself. The folks back home would be too, his dad taught him that move and Reginald never had a chance to use it.
Trotting up to the tower he passed an fellow knight.
"Good day to you, what business do you have at the dukes?" Reginald asked.
"Im turning in a bounty, planning on making myself rich I am!" the fellow knight responded "And you?"
"Im turning in a bounty as well, a local thug I happened upon this morn." They then said their goodbyes and went to stable their horses. Reginald had a bit of a time getting off his steed and when he finally had, he dropped the thugs head several times on the ground. "Curses" he said to himself "I cant show the Duke a dirty head, what will he think of me! I'll be no better than a peasant coming in to show him their unwashed spuds, no I better clean this thing off. Plus its beginning to smell rather badly." Reginald walked to the well and pulled himself up a bucket of water, the carefully washed the thugs head. He made sure to get behind his ears as well, his mother taught him that when he was young.
He saw the other knight passing by and waved "Already on your way?" he called
"Aye, it was as simple as showing him the head! He had his guards take it and then his treasurer counted out my gold and gave it to me" the other knight replied, holding up a a heavy sack as proof. "Say what is your name, when you strike it rich we could meet in the tavern and tell the stories of our bounties"
"Im Sir Reginald," he replied "And you?"
The knight replied "Sir Brutus." He mounted his horse and waved again, "Well until then, good luck!"
Reginald was giddy with excitement. His first kill, bounty and fellow knight friend all in one day! This was something he would never forget, he thought to him self. "Well, better get on with it, dont want to keep his Lordship waiting. Dont want to keep my gold waiting either!" He waltzed into the throne room, head held high. The head in a sack clanging against his armor. As he approached the throne he untied the sack and held it at arrms length.
"Your Lordship, I have came to claim bounty on this mans head!" Reginald said in his most royal and sure sounding voice.
The duke looked at him for a moment "I dont see a head Sir..... what is your name?"
Reginald realized then he had forgot to take the head out. He flushed with embarrasment and started fumbling to take it out of the sack "I...err... my name..... its...." he couldnt believe it, he forgot his own name! "its...uhhh... it is... R-R-R-Regina..ld your lordship!" He had finally got the bag unloosed and flourished the head.
"And who is this supposed to be?" The Duke asked, looking quite confused.
Reginald balked "I...err... the thug who killed your sheep you lordship" he said, his voice noticably more meek. He produced the bounty poster "See, this is him, I found him asleep in a barn this morning and stabbed him right through"
"Im sorry sir.... Reginald, but this bounty has already been claimed. The knight before you took his life this morn. He also brought his hands as well, as this man has been known to wear ruby rings on every finger. Now, I dont know who that poor soul is but this is not the thug we seek. So take that stinking thing out of here this instant!"
Sir Reginald was dejected. He had never felt such shame before, and it was all because that other knight had gotten to the king before him. Why he probably tied Reginalds' ropes up himself so that he would fall from his horse and have to clean up the head! As Reginald got on his horse he thought to himself "I am going to that Inn to meet with Sir Brutus and deal with this once and for all! That gold should be mine!"
As Reginald rode up to the inn he spotted Brutus' horse, eating oats out of a merchants stall. Reginald chuckled to himself "Even his horse is a thief, figures." He rode on and stabled his steed as far away from the other knights horse as possible. He then grabbed the sack with the head, the bounty and marched in the doorway, but not before tripping over a stick in the walkway. "Brutus!" he shouted as soon as he spotted the other knight at the bar. "I need a word with you!"
"Why of course fellow Sir!" Brutus replied joyously, "Has the his lordship served you as well as he served me?"
Reginald grew red with rage. "You stole my bounty!" he shouted loudly, and although he tried to make it sound like a roar, his voice broke and he rather sounded like a jester making fun of a damsel in distress. The pub laughed and laughed, this was not going as planned, he needed to do something before his reputation was really tarnished. "I....I challenge you to a duel!"

"Two Knights meet on a field to fight a "Duel of Honor". They each have a second, and a herald. What are they really fighting over? How does it go?"
